Why I Don’t Watch Porn – photo by Venus O’Hara

Why I Don’t Watch Porn

I have nothing against porn. I also have nothing against people having sex in front of a camera, if that is what they really want to do. I would not say that I was anti-porn in any way. I just do not want to watch it.

The main reason I do not watch porn comes down to personal taste. I would always choose erotica over porn. My preference is for a well-written script interpreted by talented actors as opposed to real sexual positions adopted by porn performers. I suppose that I want to put my own imagination to work. In mainstream porn, imagination is seldom required. The monotonous gynaecological close-ups do nothing for me, I have to say. I do not find them overly explicit as much as I consider them standardised and boring.

Another reason for my lack of interest is closely tied to popular porn trends. The increasing acceptance of ‘rough’ sex scenes in porn is quite worrying. Abusive and chauvinistic sexual behaviour, whether it is made out to be ironic, comedic or done for pure shock value, is a real turn-off for me. Sometimes, when I visit porn sites-for research purposes only I might add – I am genuinely shocked. There seems to be a much greater appetite for images that present choking, spitting and slapping on generic porn company homepages. Sometimes it can be more ‘violent’ than the BDSM category.

There are always initiatives being set out for a more sensual type of high-end aesthetic porn. Even with better set-dressing and lighting, however, you cannot create passion between performers who do not feel it. That seems to be almost impossibie.

If I had to choose my favourite porn category, then it would have to be amateur. This would only be for the accidental authenticity of it. Just knowing that the people involved were really turned on in the moment and by the opportunity, makes a big difference. It would also help to know that the moaning and groaning wasn’t just about fulfilling a contract or getting paid.

But, having said that, I have a very active sexual imagination anyway. So, I have no real need for porn as a source of inspiration in my life.

Another highly important reason why I don’t enjoy watching porn is its frequent absence of condom use. I am especially concerned about the message that it transmits to the wider society. I think that it would be really helpful if the porn industry could erotisize condoms and promote their correct usage. When, on those rare occasions that condoms do make an appearance in adult video, I often see them put on incorrectly. Sometimes they are tugged or stretched onto a penis by an actress with long nails. Another strange method is for a condom to be put on using someone else’s mouth. If a condom is not put on correctly then it becomes useless. The proper use of condoms, and their intelligent integration into porn, would be a really positive indicator for young people. This is especially important as, like it or not, they are getting the majority of their sex education from porn.

Despite all this I find the porn industry to be a fascinating topic. I often find myself watching documentaries about it online. I especially enjoy confessions from performers and producers who have left the industry. Most of the time, the behind-the-scenes scandals, and controversies, are more stimulating than the end product itself.

But, the main reason I do not watch porn is that it leaves me indifferent. If I need to access the most effective hardcore library that there will ever be, I don’t need to switch my computer at all. All I will ever need to do is close my eyes and imagine.
