Fetish Glossary

Venus O'Hara's Fetish GlossaryThe word fetish derives from 15th century Portuguese feitiço, which meant charm or spell. A fetish is an object believed to have supernatural powers, or in particular, a man-made object that has power over others. Essentially, fetishism is the attribution of inherent value or powers to an object. The terms “erotic fetish” and “sexual fetish” were first introduced by the French psychologist Alfred Binet in the 1940s.

Today a “fetish” is an object, non-reproductive body part or action whose presence or existence causes excitement and/or arousal in an individual. An object might be latex or heels, a non-sexual body part could be legs or feet and tickling or smoking are examples of actions.

“Fetish” is also used as an adjective that relates to anything connected to the world of BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadomasochism) such as fetish wear or fetish clubs.

Are Naked Selfies Liberating?

Some people believe that a selfie is only an expression of narcissism, but for me it can be much more than that. We live in a society obsessed with physical perfection and a culture that seems to be addicted to cosmetic surgery and PhotoShop. On the one hand, we are bombarded by advertising imagery on TV and in magazines that lie to us constantly and promote beauty ideals that are unachievable. On the other hand, when a media celebrity is ‘caught’ on the beach displaying a little cellulite, or carrying few extra kilos, they are ridiculed.

What’s Wrong with Hairy Armpits?

“It’s not a glamorous look”, “you’ve totally lost your sex appeal” or “how disgusting!” These are just some of the comments I received after publishing photos of my hairy armpits on social media. Of course, there were others that were more positive.

I have to say that the negative comments didn’t surprise me in the slightest. The merest glimpse of a hairy armpit on a woman usually causes this reaction. It was something that I used to find unpleasant too.

Fetishism without Photoshop

It can take a lot of hard work to create a photo. A professional photo-shoot requires the skills of the model, the photographer, stylists, hairdressers and make-up artists. Then, afterwards, it’s taken for granted that the expertise of the retouchers will be needed to add more layers. I direct myself during my own sessions and I’d prefer to avoid adding those extra layers if I can help it. My intention is to reflect reality instead.

Discovering Downblouse Fetish

Downblouse is a variety of sexual fetishism or voyeurism. It’s based on the opportunity, provided by some types of women’s clothing, for men to peer down and enjoy watching their breasts unobtrusively. It might take the form of making unauthorised digital photographs down the open top of a female’s dress, blouse or other garment. The value of ‘downblousing’ imagery is increased, from the collector’s perspective, when those pictures of breasts or cleavages are obtained thanks to random chance.

Shoe Dangling Fetish

Shoe dangling can appeal to shoe fetishists, foot fetishists or both at the same time. I do wonder if the thrill that shoe dangling fetishists experience when a woman dangles her high heel shoes is the same If her balancing ability isn’t up to scratch, and the shoe falls to the ground suddenly and unintentionally, is it a turn on? Perhaps it’s the anticipation of the shoe dropping, and not the event itself, that causes so much arousal?
